Nitin Sawhney ft./Spark

I love the lyrics of this song...very...me.

...With a mouth full of stars I trip over my feet

You've blown me away, I can hardly speak
Stolen my silence, scattered my peace
I'm lost in the dark, mislaid my spark...

Who is the female vocalist though I wonder...I think I am too lazy to look properly.

Yann Tiersen/Comptine d'un autre été (Amelie)

I remember being dead tired when I went to the cinema to see this and I think I even fell asleep! Now though seeing it for the 3rd or 4th time so many years later I feel it is strangely familiar...I think I've now reached the age where I see this film and I think....OMG that's ME! Anyway I love this piece...Cheers :)

Washington a.k.a Megan Washington

*excited* :-D!

Washington a.k.a Megan Washington is the best female voice I've heard out of this country since Katie Noonan! :) Very happy to realise there is a depth of talent to the music scene- not always particularly evident to me in my hokey city cos I'm too old for raucous big music festivals now-damn just missed seeing her...lol

Thanks to my mate Jonno for keeping me up to date with talent on the local Oz music scene...

The Presets/If I Know You

In another life I think I would be a great music exec.

I was sitting in a hotel this week when I heard this TUNE. I liked it so much I had to know what it was so with the help of the hotel person we "hound dogged" it on his Iphone...

found out it was this song...the clip is cool too...like Billy Elliot on speed! In any case I finally managed to find a copy for purchase and then realised that it was the 2008 ARIA album of the year...like I said, I'd be a great music exec...

Hello Little Cousin! (Music out of NZ) Goldenhorse X3 + Opshop

I noticed this VOICE by accident while listening to She will have her way (The songs of Neil and Tim Finn) album.

And that's how I discovered GOLDENHORSE with that characteristic Aussie daggy pop sound big in the late 80s/90s that I LOVE...she is EXACTLY like a young NZ version of Angie Hart, complete with the quirk. Definitely going to go get an album...

Three songs I really like:
GOLDENHORSE/JUMP INTO THE SUN

GOLDENHORSE/OUT OF THE MOON

GOLDENHORSE/WAKE UP BROTHER

Somone actually suggested that New Zealand is SO my kind of country...so it was pretty cool when looking at Goldhorse clips, discovering another New Zealand band...OPSHOP-lol this is unexpected from me but I thought they were worth a clip too :)

OPSHOP/WAITING NOW

She will have her way...The songs of Neil and Tim Finn

I really like Clare Bowditch's rendition of that beautiful classic

FALL AT YOUR FEET

But I still like Tim Finn doing PERSUASION himself.

Sigur Ros/Gobbledigook

This is my favourite song this weekend...Gosh I love the Icelandic people...talk abourt great attire! And what is it about their unique environment that produces such great music?

I would love to be Icelandic...especially if I could be as cute as Bjork (lol) but heck I'd take any part of Scandinavia I think -being able to speak in their cool sounding tongues alone would be worth it :)

KATE MILLER-HEIDKE/Caught in the Crowd

I like this song...acoustic version.

And the clip as well...cute :) Love the fun clips.

Oh and I like this one too: God's Gift to Women (acoustic)...LOL one person comes to mind for BOTH of these songs ;) P.S Why don't you just subscribe to her Youtube Channel?

KATE MILLER-HEIDKE/Supergirl

I'm loving Kate Miller-Heidke's Curiouser album. Best Aussie Music discovery for me in aaaages.

Anyway, how narcissistic is this...I'm dedicating this song to Meeeeeee! HAHA. Ok, All Scorp girls actually, just cos we're too...cool :)

whole song:

Shame this one got cut off!

Sigur Ros/Gong

This is the perfect Saturn Return/Mid Life Crisis song....sublime! Without the visuals this song says to me...chaos & despair, upheaval, drama, redemption, transcendence, it's "The Chariot" and 555....but also the culmination of a cycle and rebirth all in one!

this clip is one of the better ones with all important decent sound quality - I think the "nature" theme of the clip taps in well to the 'essence' of this song...especially the Winter...cold, barren...monochromatic...

it's also a nice juxtaposition of ideas to me: the insignificance and smallness of the human compared to the vast power of the natural world. Sorry I'm not in the most lucid or well expressed mode today- but hopefully you get some morsel of the idea I'm trying to express but can't seem to! :-p

THE CRANBERRIES/Linger

I was unpacking and filing all my precious babies into their specially made shelf (with much content)when I came across this old disc...and listening to this 15 years past it's prime...WOW I still love this song as much as ever! It's definitely in the hall of "Mscherrylane's All Time Classics!"

This song on repeat got me through much of my angsty teen years and hate-hate relationship with being forced to attend an anal-obsessive high school. It's been nice to be reunited...even more so, strangely I don't remember ever having seen the original video clip...and I'm actually nicely impressed- love the monochromatic shades and that seeking spotlight...wow reminds me of my film days studying "Metropolis"! LOL, I remember one of my classmates proffering that the spotlight on the woman was her being "metaphorically raped". I remember thinking at the time: "What a load of crap! What ARE all these film students ON!"

But I'm glad to say over the years, my mind has expanded exponentially out of being so literal and straightforward and...limited, since then. Cheers to ever expanding conscientious potentials...

THE NATIONAL/Conversation 16

Hehe still deeply and happily ensconced in this album :D

Conversation 16 has to be the stand out song on the High Violet album for me...by a nose...from other favourites notably Sorrow, Terrible Love and of course Runaway.

Anycase enjoy....the picture's pretty bad but the sound on this clip is fantastic! Best Cannibal Love song ever, lol.

THE NATIONAL/Runaway

Finally got my stereo setup and all my cds transported and have been enjoying THE NATIONAL's latest album High Violet....this song in particular makes particularly good musing/time out music cos it's so mellow...
So carpet kinda sucks acoustics wise compared to the luxurious sound afforded by floorboards (now completely muted sound) but hey, glad to have my music!

BABYBIRD/ You're Gorgeous

Reminiscing...this song I discovered by accident...very much reminds me of that great coming of Age series THE WONDER YEARS.

Sobred

The two songs today that resonated: THE NATIONAL's "Apartment Story"

so worry not
all things are well
we’ll be alright
we have our looks and perfume

(fab acoustic version with just matt and aaron.)

and also KD Lang's "Simple"....that is pure..."essence" in a song, what can I say "Beauty in Simplicity!" All too hard to find these days :( KD is really some kind of angel...you can so easily imagine her flanked on either side by gigantic fluffy white wings!

Clips as follows...

It was a Bipolar-y kind of day...

Not that I have BP but I find fire energy based people tend to be quite manic in this way they are up and down at both extremes of a continuum and can be all in the space of a short time- wow makes us fireys sound so damn scary!

So anyway I thought it was funnily reflected in the lyrics of two favourite great songs I listened to back to back.

THERE IS A LIGHT THAT NEVER GOES OUT- THE SMITHS

Take me out tonight
Where there's music and there's people
And they're young and alive
Driving in your car
I never never want to go home
Because I haven't got one
Anymore

Take me out tonight
Because I want to see people and I
Want to see life
Driving in your car
Oh, please don't drop me home
Because it's not my home, it's their
Home, and I'm welcome no more

And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure - the privilege is mine

Take me out tonight
Take me anywhere, I don't care
I don't care, I don't care
And in the darkened underpass
I thought Oh God, my chance has come at last
(But then a strange fear gripped me and I
Just couldn't ask)

Take me out tonight
Oh, take me anywhere, I don't care
I don't care, I don't care
Driving in your car
I never never want to go home
Because I haven't got one, da ...
Oh, I haven't got one

And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure - the privilege is mine

Oh, There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out

MINT CAR - THE CURE

The sun is up
I'm so happy I could scream!
And there's nowhere else in the world I'd rather be
Than here with you
It's perfect
It's all I ever wanted
I almost can't believe that it's for real

I really don't think it gets any better than this
Vanilla smile
And a gorgeous strawberry kiss!
Birds sing we swing
Clouds drift by and everything is like a dream
It's everything I wished

Never guessed it got this good
Wondered if it ever would
Really didn't think it could
Do it again?
I know we should!!!

The sun is up
I'm so fizzy I could burst!
You wet through and me headfirst
Into this is perfect
It's all I ever wanted
Ow! it feels so big it almost hurts!

Never guessed it got this good
Wondered if it ever would
Really didn't think it could
Do it some more?
I know we should!!!

Say it will always be like this
The two of us together
It will always be like this
Forever and ever and ever...

Never guessed it got this good
Wondered if it ever would
Really didn't think it could
Do it all the time?
I know that we should!!!

Really connect with everything about this song lately...

PONYO - Credits (English)

I LOVE this movie- my favourite kids movie music since THE LITTLE MERMAID!

I loved it so much I even cared to record the lyrics(how I heard them) to sing along^^...lol, a forever kid!!!

Ponyo Ponyo Ponyo
Fishy in the Sea
Tiny little Fishy who could you really be?
Ponyo Ponyo Ponyo
Magic Set You Free
O She's a little Girl
With a round tummy.

Tip Tippy Toe
Jump Jump and Hop
Now that I've got my legs
I cannot stop
Pat Patty Pat
Waving Hello
Come and hold hands with me
Dancing we go

My feet are skipping my heart too
Happy Happy are we all
Maybe I might love you
Maybe I might love you
So Hold on Tight and Hold me Close
You're My Hero...

Ponyo Ponyo Ponyo
Fishy in the Sea
Tiny little Fishy who could you really be?
Ponyo Ponyo Ponyo
Magic Set You Free
O pretty little girl will you swim back to me?

KD Lang/ Hallelujah

Whenever I hear this beautiful lady singing this song I think to myself: "THERE IS GOD"... and Angels!!! ^^

Monday, April 26, 2010

THE NATIONAL/High Violet

You can preview their soon to be released album here.

I wish they'd come back to Oz soon. Seeing them live at Angel Place is still one of my most special musical moments ever -definitely the best indoor gig I have ever witnessed in this country!!!!

I guess I'll have to catch them when I'm in the Northern Hemisphere...here's hoping!

Katie Noonan & The Captains/Emperor's Box @ 505

This song as well as "Page One" sound so amazing live, but unfortunately that really doesn't come through in this particular clip. Oh well, will be getting the CD ^^ Caught Katie Noonan performing her new stuff at the Art Gallery recently....really, really good stuff!

Mumford & Sons/Little Lion Man

Occasionally a not particularly amazing but catchy song comes along where it seems like everybody likes it and you can't help but get on the bandwagon ;)

JOY DIVISION/Disorder

This is my new favourite for the moment, possibly cos I have been in such a state of hectic chaos myself! LOL

Friday, March 19, 2010

MILES DAVIS/Summertime

This is a great track (with a leisurely glass of wine) with alfresco meal preferably just to unwind and relax after a tiring day...it's ironic that planning a huge holiday globetrot is actually quite stressful and hard work on the brain!

Thursday, March 18, 2010

MOBY/Rushing

wow, can you believe the hugely successful PLAY album is over 10 years old??!!!

Someone feels old!

Anyway this one is short and sweet- my favourite bit comes in at 1:20.

Enjoy :)

A-HA/Take On Me

Sorry I couldn't help it lapsing into my favourite...classic 80s!

p.s I love how the youtube poster felt a need for a disclaimer: "I'm a true rocker but I love this song and no, it's not gay." lol.

ARVO PART/Spiegel im Spiegel

Thanks to my cultured photographer net friend VZ my world has been enlightened with the music of Arvo Part...loooove *swoons* lol

Please enjoy :)

p.s a fantastic interview with Arvo by Bjork(how cute is her accent!)

THE TRIFFIDS/Trick of the Light

I love this tune or maybe it is cos I am in the mood to unleash my inner 40 something year old, lol.

In any case I love the melodies and lyricism from bands such as THE TRIFFIDS...I also love that poetry and sense of Nostalgia that seems to all pervade their music.

REGINA SPEKTOR/Fidelity

My mate said I'm like a doggie. I guess cause I am loyal as hell...not something commonly found in most human beings :p

KEANE

I spent much of today listening to UNDER THE IRON SEA...nice album. I'm not sure why I left it to collect dust for so long.

Here were my two favourites for today

A BAD DREAM (actually most of my dreams lately have been so good I didn't want to get up, lol!)

THE FROG PRINCE (no, no Frogs or Princes either. Just random, very random, STUFF.)

REENA BHARDWAJ/Voice of An Angel

She has no albums of her own yet, but you can hear her on Nitin Sawhney and Ministry of Sound Albums and on Indian films - I think she was discovered by Composer A.R Rahman, whose music most people have probably heard in the movie Slumdog Millionaire.

This song, MAUSAM is most easily accessible to the western ear...(very Bollywood sound.) And not to sound *dramatic* but this is the SOUNDTRACK to the rest of my life, starting today! :-D

And the one suited to those of us who really love and appreciate our world music :)

Reena has has her own site where you can have a good listen to her portfolio. *love* :D

EMILIANA TORRINI/ Sunny Road & Heartstopper

Okay, so I'm a sucker for the Icelandic...

but you gotta admit this is a pretty cool animation...and her video clips are much more interesting than the average...

And this song is not too bad...but at the end of the day I am just a sucker for the voice...she actually reminds me of an Icelandic Sarah Blasko...lol.

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Manu and the "Hang"

LOL, almost sounds like a good name for a band!

Actually his name is Manu Delago and he plays the "Hang"...drum(?).

In any case the sound is quite mesmerizing-sample his work here. I love creative music :)

BLONDE REDHEAD/Top Ranking

I've always been drawn to otherworldly and ethereal voices...maybe cos they are such a stark contrast to our impermanence and mortality.

The official video could have been so much better though....the distinctive model is Miranda July, who you might remember from Me and You and Everyone We Know.

RHCP/Under the Bridge

Okay, every now and again I gotta curb my specific tastes and post a mainstream tune everyone knows...this was my favourite one from pub karaoke last night- if anything, the sedated sounds were a refreshing and much welcome change from some of that really intolerable super sugar-pumped happy pappy bopster crap!
