Shout Out Louds..."We're all very interested in food"

I really enjoyed this interview with Carl and Adam from Swedish pop sensation Shout Out Louds. Loads of Swedish pop music leads to follow up in there :)

Here are some clips:

IMPOSSIBLE

I actually really like "A track and a train" and "Go Sadness" off Howl Howl but unfortunately they aren't on youtube so...

Inspiration from LISA GERRARD/Now We Are Free

I am loving the angelic sound of Lisa Gerrard lately. Basically after a day of interaction with the city I feel vile, dirty, cynical, negative, disappointed in humanity and corrupted.

Listening to her music "cleanses" and reenergizes...so that I can be rebirthed into something a bit more pure and wholesome feeling again...

Cleansing...The Music of Lisa Gerrard

I was lucky enough to pick up the "career-spanning retrospective" of Lisa Gerrard CD today for only $15! :-)

After a couple of hours spent bustling through the disgusting CBD environment I was thoroughly drained and feeling urgh...so it was with much relief I took refuge in this CD playing full blast and felt instantly 'cleansed'...

Her music/soundscapes are absolutely inspiring. Although I haven't heard much of her music, I was instantly enchanted: its haunting beauty and otherworldly and ethereal nature...my hyperactive brain had a blast...her music is so richly evocative...vivid imageries seamlessly sprung to mind...

*moonlit night, choppy rough seas, sunken sailors
*transcending the human body to the afterlife, floating, heavenly, free, ethereal, spirit
*desolate cemetaries swathed in creeping mists
*this is the music that plays just before the protagonist gets sacrificed and executed
*dark stormy nights with thunder and lightning

anyway, if you're a music aficionado like me, Lisa Gerrard music is definitely something you wanna sink your ears into! Cheers :)

p.s Of course I couldn't just leave with the one cd...I also picked up 4 others...(smacks the hand)...I am such a credit risk if left to my own devices in a cd store...this time I came prepared though with a well thought out list so only ended up with one impulse buy....phew!

Anyway was very happy with the selection purchased today:

Apart from Lisa Gerrard I also got

1) THE NATIONAL "Cherry Tree"
2) DECODER RING "Somersault"
3) CUT COPY "In Ghost colours" (I actually meant to get the previous album but it wasn't in stock and this one was pretty good when I sampled it)
4) THE CHURCH "Hindsight" (this 2 cd best of 1980-1987 was only $13! Happy Happy :)

ANYWAY...here's Lisa Gerrard performing "Sacrifice"...this piece is so aptly titled...and it touches to the very core...

THE BEASTIE BOYS/Body Movin'

So...I love the album HELLO NASTY but this song can get on my nerves...the video however is TOTAL FUN!! Watch it!!!

Love the fluffy bunny slippers and the rolling head with the fake blood! ;)

The second part is so spoof James Bond or Austin Powers!!

THE NATIONAL/About Today

From one of my all time favourite bands THE NATIONAL...'About Today' has got to be one of the most melancholy songs that has ever existed, yet it is so very beautiful that I don't mind even if it inevitably makes me recall sad memories from the past.

Check out this awesome clip of the song performed live at la Guinguette Pirate by talented film maker Vincent Moon who has amazingly managed to capture within this clip a real presence yet nostalgia all at the same time.

Cheers to a great day if you happen to be A Birthday Twin :-D

CUT COPY/kidz at the disco

Does anybody know the CUT COPY song that goes...

It's not the music that I'm into.
It's just an attitude.
Kids at the disco, act so cool
But I can see right through.

lol, everytime I hear this only one thing comes to mind...hence with the utmost sincerity(smell the irony), I dedicate this post to all the pretentious tryhards that frequent this city...en masse!
Hear some of CUT COPY's current music here...unfortunately I can't find the kidz at the disco song anywhere to share :(
I think this band sounds a little like new order/bloc party/joy division- what do you think?

MARTHA WAINWRIGHT/When the Day is Short

I first heard the wonderfully unique voice of Martha on Snow Patrol's "Set the Fire to the Third Bar" which I liked so much I bought the album just to have that one song!

A Big Martha fan Jonno then randomly crashlanded into my blog and inspired me to order an album without ever having heard any of her music...

So I got MARTHA WAINWRIGHT...

I was utterly disappointed.

Fast Forward several months later and I'm needing something "fresh" so I start playing all the many albums I bought "on a whim" and haven't listened to more than 10x...

I think you gotta be in a certain mood for Martha...I'm really liking it playing evenings while I do alfresco on the balcony! So anyway, many more listens later, I decided I really like this song off the album..."When the Day is Short"...enjoy :)

p.s just found out she's CANADIAN...don't know what it is but I'm starting to realise I seem to like lots of CANADIANS!! weird.

THE NATIONAL/Ada

I feel like Ada.

Matt Berninger has got to be my favourite (current)vocalist ever...what an awesome Baritone!

I had the good fortune of seeing him perform at Angel Place earlier this year...and what a weird venue, but the acoustics were...the best!

Can't wait for them to come back...Best indoor concert I've ever been to!

I LOVE THE NATIONAL.

THE SHINS/Kissing the Lipless

Something a bit different...I found this sound really refreshing today. Really resonates with my current urge of throwing all caution to the wind.

MADONNA/Cherish

Great song to waken from the inevitable afternoon brain siesta...this is probably my favourite of Early Madonna...Love "The Immaculate Collection" - I'm an eighties child after all ;)

this one is good to wake up those dwindling brain cells as well ;)

MUSE/Falling away with you

This is my favourite song from this band...I especially love the organic squeakiness of when he changes chords...or whatever you call it!

This is a favourite song to Daydream with...perfect for being Away with the Fairies :)

Some Favourite Suzanne Vega Songs

I'm not sure why I'm suddenly so in a Suzanne Vega mood lately- I couldn't sleep without first listening to her beautiful 'lullaby' voice :)

I guess it's cos she is of an era I'm more comfortable with...

Arcade Fire/Keep the Car Running (Coachella 2007)

LOL...lots of curling up to sleep, chocolate, music and art later my car is now running again after going AWOL the last few days cos the fuel tank had totally run empty!

Love this very fun song by Arcade Fire- always makes me feel like jumping up and down :)

If I ever get on that long haul flight to CA I really want to go to Coachella...

World Music Spotlight: TCHEKA

Knowing that I love world music, especially YOUSSOU N'DOUR(Senegal) and African music in general, my mate was telling me about the newer popstars out of Cape Verde(prior I had only known about Cesaria Evora)...anyhow it was when I was checking out one of his recommendations: Lura, that I stumbled across the amazing voice of TCHEKA!!

Anyhow please enjoy...

Aussie Music: Does anyone remember THE HUMMINGBIRDS?!!

Arguably the cream of Aussie *POP* music in 1989 onwards...well yeah it was all the rage to me as a 9 year old LOL clip two is particularly daggy (was My Favourite back then LOL) but the video is an interesting documentation of Australia at that time.

Anyway found these on Youtube :)

ZAZIE/Rose (from "Ma Vie En Rose")

I absolutely adored the film "Ma Vie En Rose" when I saw it...shite...about 10 years ago! I love this song too...ironically the theme title is still the colour I like least...

To get a really great sneak peek into the movie watch this trailer...I especially love the Spanish subtitles on this clip LOL ;)

How cute is the kid?!!

I stumbled onto this song by accident- I really like this band's sound...definitely have to check out more - seem promising- possibly the next big thing on my music radar....yep I'm slow...

Joy Division/Love will Tear us Apart

this song has got one of the catchiest melodies ever...

this is an interesting version(John Peel session for BBC-1979)- I still prefer the usual version, but this new video by Jonathan Beamish is kinda cool.

The Smiths/There is a light that never goes out

This song is dedicated to Soulmates the world over :-)

my favourite lines:

"and if a doubledecker bus crashes into us
to die by your side
is such a heavenly way to die...

and if a ten tonne truck
kills the both of us
to die by your side
well the pleasure the privilege is mine..."

So romantic. LOL

AUTOUR DE LUCIE/Je reviens

Soundtrack: "Je Reviens" by Autour De Lucie...gorgeous song!

and the cutest little animation I've seen in a while :) by Rocinante.

Sample more of their music at http://autourdelucie.artistes.universalmusic.fr/ and http://www.myspace.com/autourdelucie - if you like AIR, this is a band definitely worth checking out!

MORRISSEY/Interesting Drug

If you can't stand 80s BOP then you're lucky we're not neighbours cos I have absolutely no qualms in playing this on indefinite repeat!!! LOL

The opening intro to this song is AWESOME- I don't dance but it does make me feel like *bouncing around* at least! ;)

Maybe this song will always be special to me cos in some ways -hehe- is it not a tribute to what will be my life's work?!

What a gem!

Doing the all important organise what ipod music I need for my trip....and just made this AWESOME DISCOVERY...

Thanks to Zelig666 there are heaps more great Youtube videos for THE TRIFFIDS AND THE GO-BETWEENS!

THAAANK YOUUU!

it's circa 1988...

I see my long-time music idols at my current age and think...damn, why wasn't I born 20 years earlier?!!

THE TRIFFIDS/Trick of the light(Live)

Here's another beauty:

THE TRIFFIDS/Save what you can (the video by truckstop media is strangely compelling too...)

THE GO-BETWEENS/ The Clarke Sisters

p.s does anybody have a clip for THE TRIFFIDS/Holy Water OR THE TRIFFIDS/Blinder by the hour?

okay this girl needs to get back to packing...LOL

Holiday!

Everything about this song just seemed appropriate... ;)

This Drowned World Tour 2001 version is very very different to the original video clip ;)

That's what makes her such an enduring superstar- the ability to reinvent herself over and over and move with the times...

The Best? Of U2

U2 is one of those classic bands that EVERYBODY likes and can sing or hum along to at least one of their songs (or a few)...they're kinda like The Beatles in that way I guess...

I'm not their biggest fan - I only have 4 albums - in any case I thought I'd dip into that sticky mess it is to try and pick out some favourites...

Conclusion?...IMPOSSIBLE!

So let's just say most of the time my favourite is often Stay, Faraway So Close or Sunday Bloody Sunday...and who can forget Beautiful Day?

I think because they have so many great songs you can only just pick depending on what you feel like on the day...so today, I feel like...

an...ELECTRICAL STORM!

it also happens to combine 3 artistes I like in the one clip...U2, William Orbit and Anton Corbijn :)

Múm: Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy

So, it's been a while since I pulled out this album...nice for a change from the female acoustic vocals phase I've been in lately.

Here is a favourite from the album: DANCING BEHIND MY EYELIDS- lol I can relate to that!!!

There's nothing that gives me more PLEASURE than Playing This at FULL BLAST on a quiet overcast Sunday :-)

p.s I also love how Múm never neglect the whole audiovisual experience- always making interesting vids to match :-)

Discovery! Rachel's

arghhhhhhhh...LOVE! at last, an interesting music discovery after too long a drought!

they say if you like michael nyman(composer of 'the piano') you're sure to love this!!!

so awesome...not encountered this style of music much before...LOVE!

the video clip is really cool too.

Feist: How my heart behaves

I love how moody and beautiful this song is- it really captures well the quiescence of night time especially the wee hours...

this clip has that gorgeous texture you can only get in live performances...

Snow Patrol: Eyes Open

This is probably my favourite song on this album...

SET THE FIRE TO THE THIRD BAR

But then I also like this one...the song that is.

YOU COULD BE HAPPY

this one's not bad either...LOL

MAKE THIS GO ON FOREVER

Wow, is that the first time I've put up a song that had more than a million hits?

hmmm I need to work out how to put some of the unknown stuff I like up on Youtube...one day: it just seems sad to put up a song without accompanying visuals...I should try and dig into my skeleton closet for long lost Final cut pro/video editing skills in the interest of promoting good music...but sheesh even back then when I had the luxury of time and the obligation of submitting something to get my degree, I still didn't even have the patience for the time consuming, anal task that is multimedia production...

So for some ideas on some really cool but little known Aussie musos check out
rufusrecords - I particularly like the contemporary Jazz musicians on this label. Currently listening to Aussie stuff from a while back...Not Drowning Waving, Paul Grabowsky, Bernie McGann, The Catholics, Clarion Fracture Zone etc...

George: Still Real

Managed to catch an awesome GEORGE live from the Opera House feature on MAX? pay tv music channel at the gym...hopefully someone recorded it and can post it on youtube...

George are an Aussie band(from Brisbane) with the angelic voice of Katie Noonan...for more visit here. This song "Still Real" is from their 2004 album UNITY.

Gosh I long for retirement where I can have a house like that "among the gum trees with a verandah out the back and verandah out the front" and who can forget the "old rocking chair!" - too bad if you don't know that song LOL...gosh I miss clean air, wide open space!! That's why I love regional Australia!

Beggars Banquet

Just a quickie cos REALLY I should be studying ;)

I first knew this label as the GO-BETWEENS probably Biggest & Youngest Fan LOL.

In any case since then they popped up noticeably again when I discovered I love THE NATIONAL.

Been listening to other artists they have released and I must say they still have consistently GREAT stuff!!!

In lieu of not posting a favourite song link and not having enough time to trawl through everything yet please go investigate the goodies for yourself at their website and their youtube channel. Cheers :)

Sunday, May 4, 2008

is my taste too obscure? :-P

Sheesh, I haven't posted anything interesting music wise for aaaages! I feel kinda guilty about this...

It's not cos I can't think of anything, it's cos 75% of my favourite songs I can't find on youtube or anywhere else: either they are too unknown or too...historical and unknown...

Hence for example...my favourite world artist- Youssou N'Dour- the only old stuff you can find of his on youtube seem to be the big English language hits he had with Neneh Cherry and Peter Gabriel...definitely nothing close to his best stuff!

In any case if you're in Europe I suggest you just go see him perform LIVE- along with Angelique Kidjo, he is AWESOME Live: a real mover and shaker too ;) Both these performers just ooze charisma - Youssou N'dour is the epitome of COOL-FUNKY-GROOVY in one person- it's amazing that I've managed to catch both artists here in Oz LIVE cos we don't often get big world music acts here- it's not a particularly popular or known genre here.

I did manage to find one good quality youtube video I can find from the golden era of his music...Please enjoy his amazing voice in Immigrés/Bitim Rew....for more info you can visit his site. Cheers :)

GOLDFRAPP: Road to Somewhere

The new album 'Seventh Tree' has gotten some pretty harsh reviews e.g Pitchfork described it as "sonic dishwater".

I disagree. I think it's a pretty damn good album. And her voice is stunning.

Maybe it's cos I'm not familiar with the previous stuff- I had no expectations. The sound is yes, mellow (and a bit folksy), but brings to mind a mix of...Cocteau Twins, Madonna, Beatles, Feist...

In any case, this is arguably the best song on the album- well my favourite anyway. Enjoy...

Sunday, April 13, 2008

The Cure: Mint Car

This is not the usual kind, but a romantic love song never the less! A fun & flamboyant clip too...

One of my favourite catchy songs at the moment :)

Friday, April 4, 2008

Goldfrapp: A&E

I like this song! The first time I heard of Goldfrapp was in the movie Hard Candy but this sounds a lot mellower...as to whether I like GOLDFRAPP the band, gotta hear more stuff!

Wednesday, April 2, 2008

Xavier Rudd: No Woman No Cry

I can't believe how ignorant I am...I only just heard Aussie muso Xavier Rudd for the first time today! Anyway in light of how much I love this Bob Marley song...here is the Xavier Rudd rendition...

also, check out the second clip...one of his songs - 12th September- check out the cool guitar and didgeridoo playing!!!(just random cos i haven't heard much of his stuff to have a favourite yet)...I love the laid back easy going sound - he seems like a really cool person not just a talented musician! Looking forward to catching a live performance one day!

AND CHECK OUT CLIP 3-Messages Music Video-which doubles as a tourism clip LOL! how beautiful is my country?!! ;)

Monday, March 31, 2008

Natalie Imbruglia: Satellite

...and here's something actually from the current century LoL...(home grown singer originally from the central coast-yay!) Probably my fav song on the album White Lilies Island...

i love how candid this clip is- just makes me wish I was privy to a recording studio where various artists just drop in from time to time...

Antipodean Underground: Unearthed!!!

What a Find!!!

I'M EXCITED.

Antipodean Underground is a blog dedicated to: "Preserving Australian & New Zealand Underground Music from the 70’s to 90’s"!!!

It's BRIMMING with good quality mp3s of stuff you really can't get easily :-D! :-D!

This post on "A Tribute To the Go-Betweens" was especially exciting...can't wait for my happy ears to get a chance to trawl through this blog :)

The Kin: Hello, Adelaide!

So apparently THE KIN are a big deal in NYC, but they are actually Australian...but somehow...I can confidently say most Aussies would be..."the WHO?!"

I think they are possibly the coolest thing out of Adelaide since Haighs Chocolate hehe ;) Best musical discovery of '08 so far, personally.

Hear a good selection of their stuff here :)

Rodrigo Y Gabriela: Libertango

I love this interpretation. Yo Yo Ma also does an awesome version of this...

Bob's Songs of Comfort :)

At times like these when I feel all my worlds are imminently converging to culminate in one inevitable, almighty, intergalactic BIG BANG, there are a few songs I find comforting to listen to: this is one of them...

Bob Marley & The Wailers: No Woman, No Cry
"Everything's gonna be alright, Everything's gonna be alright..." ;)

More literal reassurance can be found in THREE LITTLE BIRDS..."Don't worry, about a thing....cos everything little thing's gonna be alright!" hehe ;)

Best of Aussie Quirk: Frente!

alot of people get straight away that I would like Frente! They just think it makes sense that quirky people like quirk. But actually: I just appreciate creative talent in whatever form it may take ;)

So although Ordinary Angels is definitely "my essence" in a song and thus, my favourite song by Frente! hands down...This one - "Accidentally Kelly St" has got to be their "catchiest" song hands down...and I'll admit, it's pretty daggy (especially the video clip) but you just gotta remember it's dated (I'm sure it was WAY COOL back then LOL)...all good fun! And you gotta love Angie Hart for being different and she definitely has a really unique voice...she's recently gone solo - check out here.

Best of Aussie 80s: The Church

Most people only know THE CHURCH for their hit song Under the Milky Way. This is 'Reptile' probably my favourite song off their excellent album Starfish which Clever D was able to get for me for the bargain price of FIVE BUCKS in his skilful trawling of second hand music stores :)

Sunday, March 2, 2008

The Go-Betweens: Best Australian Band of ALL TIME(in my humble opinion)

THE GO-BETWEENS are my favourite band EVER (closely followed by THE NATIONAL) but sadly the more time passes, the less easy it is to find people that know them!

I'm still regretting not ever having seen the Go-Betweens Live when I still had a chance :(

I just always assumed musos 20 years later wouldn't be that good to see- BOY WAS I WRONG!

So glad to see clips on Youtube! Here is a gorgeous version of Clouds with Grant and Robert playing at the Tivoli in 06.

Seems very appropriate as a "Vale, Grant" :( song....

Here are a couple of songs from their 30year span...I cannot believe how underrated this band is...I mean, how often do you get song writing and lyrics like THAT anymore?! Sure the clips may date these songs but how classic and timeless are they in sound yet at the same time strangely nostalgic in feel?

Showcasing Aussie Music: GEORGE

I must admit, since I got super busy I almost considered packing in this blog, but I still like it even if noone else does :-P

If just one person discovers some new music they like cos of it then it was worth posting...

Anyway this is George, a band from Brisbane which has Katie Noonan who has a wonderfully angelic set of vocal chords. Anyway you can check out soundbytes on their myspace page here. (I recommend listening to Special Ones and Bastard Son.) If you really like her voice she recently went solo and has her own myspace page here.

JOSH PYKE/Sew My Name

Welcome to the first in a series of showcasing Australian musicians...

Not particularly standout or interesting in anyway but I really love this song off his great album "Memories and Dust" - this is one of the best albums for "on the road" - it really sets the mood well especially if you're travelling through regional Australia :)

Monday, January 14, 2008

The point is it's a great song!

Just ignore the clip... Couldn't resist dropping into Red Eye when I was passing the other day...a very familiar voice started blaring over the speakers....Morrissey! Anyway this is a great Smiths song which, strangely, I'd never heard before...yes I ended up leaving with a new CD ;) :P

Train of Thought: Yo La Tengo, Calexico, Anton Corbijn

So my one fellow music aficionado friend who doesn't even live in Australia anymore but I happened to see on the weekend happened to mention seeing the band Yo La Tengo before...a band I often hear mentioned but had no idea what their music is like...I was checking out Wayne-the-good-music-reviewer's flickr site, when I saw the same band name pop up and decided that I needed to hear what they were all about!

First impression? Catchy! I don't know how long they'd last on repeat but I quite like this song- a refreshing change from what I usually listen to- might actually like them...but gotta hear more of their stuff to decide...

YO LA TENGO/Mr Tough

Also, I saw Calexico, a name I had long forgotten but had been recommended to me years and years ago in the days when dial-up 56kbps internet was all the rage and youtube didn't even exist yet(!!) ...so decided to give them a listen but found myself immediately more drawn to their visually interesting video clips than their music...

CALEXICO/the black light

CALEXICO/Cruel

Finally while on the subject of music video clips...this is still my all time favourite by the great Anton Corbijn: wow I feel like such an ignoramus for not realising just how famous he is and how much he has done besides this clip! ie: taken the photos of so many famous musicians and album covers! :-o!

JOY DIVISION/atmosphere

Martin Dosh:I'm a FAN!!!

He captivated me with the most *amazing* (and creative) drumming I have ever witnessed in my life! (as part of Andrew Bird's band at the Sydney Festival). I spent half the show watching him play drums and remembering how that was the instrument I so wanted to learn as a kid except that being a "girl" it was seen as "inappropriate" so then I ended up with the prissy flute which I subsequently detested! ANYWAY Martin Dosh is a talented multi-instrumentalist with some really great and *interesting* experimental/electronica/folk rock music in his own right!! Check out his myspace page here.

Arcade Fire/No Cars Go

So the Sydney New Year Fireworks as usual were stunning...couldn't say so much about the music this year though...the only bit I really liked was the inclusion of this song in the midnight session...and what was the deal with the hourglass? To me its appearance in the 9 o'clock fireworks was just as (un)exciting as Times Square's Ball Drop...no offence if you're from that part of the world haha...but first experience our New Year Fireworks on the harbour and then tell me if I'm wrong...LOL
