The XX/Blood Red Moon

Electronic Minimalism? "Too cool for school"? I don't know how you call it but I like this sound anyway!

PET SHOP BOYS/ I wouldn't normally do this kind of thing

How gay is this song and especially this version too(I much prefer the "Very" album version)...however it's most appropriate for the moment, lol!

BLONDE REDHEAD/Misery is a Butterfly

I am having such a nice time refreshing my IPOD- need a changeover for the road!!!

Anycase I really like this song today- I find it interesting that the lead singer is Japanese...I always imagined her as Icelandic -with that voice! lol

WHAM/Wake me up before you go go!

If Life is like a rollercoaster, I'm very glad to say I am at one of its peaks rather than its troughs. So maybe the clip that follows is classic "peak" music...ANYWAY.

The other day I was having coffee with a filmmaker and I glimpsed this keyring with some man on it.

Who is that? I asked.
George. She replied.

George? Who George?!! I asked.

Luckily she didn't take me for as ignorant as my question seemed and shoved the keyring closer to my eyeballs...

Ohhhhh...George MICHAEL GEORGE! I exclaimed.

I love George! She replied.

Yeah Me too!!!

And here is a karaoke friendly clip of my favourite WHAM song as a young child...Have fun singing along :)

VANESSA MAE/Night Flight

I stopped trying to fish around for inspiration from others...humans are just....human, so I turn to nature, art and...MUSIC!

I particularly like Track 5 on Vanessa Mae's "Subject to Change" - Night Flight.

Of course there are some dubious moments, like when she talk-sings, but all in all I'd have to say her work is quite an agreeable style of electro-classic fusion.

I remember when my Sinophilic Classical Music Loving mate first gave me her music, I was rather dubious cos all I knew of her was that she seemed like a bit of an attention seeker and had "corrupted" classical music by needing to sexify it so...

In any case I am much less judgemental and rigid in how I think now...the girl has talent, who cares how she chooses to present herself and/or classical music!

Microwave Jenny

Exciting! This is the best music out of oz I've heard in a while! Can't believe they're as yet unsigned- if I was a label I would so sign them...Tessa's voice speaks for itself...honestly reminds me of when I first heard Kate Ceberano....absolutely gorgeous! Hopefully they play some local shows soon :)

Check out their myspace or their webpage(my fav="mellow") and here's some youtube...

hmmm sometimes I think, I should be in the music business, I think my good taste in music ;) lends itself well to being able to pick the next big thing (well at least on the independent music scene!) I think this band is screaming for signing- can't believe they haven't been picked up yet!

Josh Pyke/When We Get There

Opening tune off the movie "The Black Balloon" Good but Intense...I felt drained just watching it- I quite like this song though :)

Guess which Song?

Lyrics: "I made a lot of mistakes, I made a lot of mistakes".

Song, artist?

Bjork/Venus as a Boy

I can just imagine if I had been born a boy...I'm in that kind of "off with the fairies" daydreaming mode today...

This is my fav song off DEBUT - or, a toss up with PLAY DEAD.

Dave Matthews/One Sweet World

I can't remember how I discovered Dave Matthews a while back...but I remember investigating his music further very much because of hearing this song...

Here is a nice live version...Enjoy! :)

BJORK/In the Musicals

edit: here is a pretty cool dance video clip to the song

If you are a BJORK fan and do not own the album "Selmasongs" a.k.a Soundtrack for Lars Von Trier's "Dancer in the Dark"...YOU NEED TO GO AND BUY IT!!!

This little beauty has been hidden collecting dust on my shelf for a while cos I'd forgotten about it! But it is absolutely fantastic!

Unfortunately the sound in this clip cuts out half way...even more so why you should go buy the album for the song in full!

Anyway hopefully if I listen to this song enough I will get the *zing* I need to get through my mountains of work today...Yikes!

LAMB/Please

I really like listening to this song today...for some reason.

BLONDE REDHEAD/My Impure Hair

Live... Awesome!

LOL, the title reminds me of a certain someone who hasn't washed his hair for 7 weeks and is so proud of discovering hair's "self cleaning abilities" he keeps shoving his head in everyone's face inviting them to smell, touch....Gross!!

Cattle & Cane live acoustic (including Interview with Robert & Grant)

I love this song. The lyrics, the imagery, so vivid...

I recall a schoolboy coming home
Through fields of cane
To a house of tin and timber
And in the sky
A rain of falling cinders
From time to time
The waste memory-wastes
I recall a boy in bigger pants
Like everyone
Just waiting for a chance
His father’s watch
He left it in the showers
From time to time
The waste memory-wastes
I recall a bigger brighter world
A world of books
And silent times in thought
And then the railroad
The railroad takes him home
Through fields of cattle
Through fields of cane
From time to time
The waste memory-wastes
The waste memory-wastes...

Further, longer, higher, older.

My Bloody Valentine/Soon

SOON. :)

(500) Days of Summer...The Soundtrack!

This movie has a KICK ASS soundtrack...the first film in ages where the music was like candy to my brain!

Others that come to mind (if I remember correctly) are HIGH FIDELITY, GARDEN STATE and DONNIE DARKO...or maybe that's just my taste in music.

But (500) days of Summer...wow, not just a soundtrack...it really correlates with my musical taste!

It featured my favourite SMITHS song "there is a light that never goes out"^^

And a major surprise musical discovery for me was Carla Bruni...wow! The French First Lady is a respectable musician in her own right!!!

Other sound I really liked was:

Mumm-Raa

and of course Ms. Spektor

And...The Pixies song "Here comes your man"

apart from the familiar music, I was particularly amused by the Unknown Pleasures Joy Division t-shirt and the little send up snippet of Ingmar Bergman's Seventh Seal...eh, so nice to be able to have a film with so many "bits" I actually get...

I'm an 80s child after all.

The only regret I have about being born in 1980 is that I missed being able to enjoy my favourite music era in its currency...

I received 2 CDs in the mail today...best of Depeche Mode and best of Joy Division.

*sigh....I looooooove it.

I think for me, perhaps MUSIC was the one biggest factor in my conditioning...perhaps that is why I have never been able to relate to people my own age...and why they completely do not know how to appreciate my music :p

Anyway I leave you with some Joy Division and some Depeche Mode...Enjoy!!! :)

LOVE WILL TEAR US APART (Joy Division)

SHAKE THE DISEASE (Depeche Mode)

SHE'S LOST CONTROL (Joy Division)

THE GO-BETWEENS/16 Lovers Lane

As couples everywhere around me break up, bicker, turn their heads and close their eyes holding it together for the sake of the kids, valiantly staving off being another "D" statistic (at a rate to challenge the speed of light), I thought it fitting to feature songs from The Go-Betweens most accessible album: a whole album dedicated to the realities of Love- all the trials and tribulations of relationships...a glimmer of Hope but with a real sense of underlying futility...just like our exponentially skyrocketing divorce rates!

Thanks to WhackaWhacka for putting up so many songs so that the whole album can be enjoyed by all. (p.s check out his channel- some good stuff, including his own pieces- this one being my favourite!)

THE BANGLES/September Gurls

LOL, just to celebrate the start of September!

I had a hankering for old school sounds...and picked up a Bangles CD as well as The Beach Boys yesterday-haha...

Geez 80s hair was BAD.

RADIOHEAD/bulletproof...i wish i was

eh, i like this one too!!

RADIOHEAD/Sulk

so i declare
a holiday
fall asleep
drift away

LOL, this one's a blast down Memory Lane...wow, can you believe this album is FOURTEEN years old?

Sheesh, that makes me feel old. I still listen and think I'm a teenager!

In any case I quite liked this clip- thought it really matched the song well.

I think this song is good for people like me- who always want EVERYTHING just perfect RIGHT NOW...lol, so hard to please...

U2/Sometimes you can't make it on your own

This has got to be one of the most beautiful U2 songs...

it seems especially pertinent when all your closest people are at a distance...

On the practical-material front I have so much great support and contacts with which I defintely could not succeed or thrive without... however it is in terms of not having those deep mental-emotional resonances, connections and bonds readily at hand in the tangible world, it can sometimes feel...tough.

It is so easy to anchor in practical materialism or "comfort" people but to be able to feel truly grounded it has to come from that place we often get too busy to remember to connect with, deep within. I find being in nature is a good prompt to get back to that elusive place...for me it's almost like a magical door that appears transiently, then disappears...but I usually find I'm the one that can make it appear if I try hard enough.

DEPECHE MODE/Enjoy the Silence (Live, Dortmund 1989)

Sorry I'm an 80s child after all...

I LOOOOOVE THIS!

Words like violence
Break the silence
Come crashing in
Into my little world

Painful to me
Pierce right through me
Can't you understand
Oh my little girl

All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

Vows are spoken
To be broken
Feelings are intense
Words are trivial
Pleasures remain
So does the pain
Words are meaningless
And forgettable

All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

Enjoy the silence

PETER DICKSON/For Dad

I woke up one morning to some captivating music...so tranquil I was thinking now this wouldn't be half bad for my patients to relax to in the background!

I have since found this to be the "lullaby-esque" track I first heard...definitely a huge departure from my usual listening fare(shows I'm getting old LOL)...the guy is an amazing guitarist by the way-definitely youtube his other stuff- he has an impressive repertoire!

MUSE/Endlessly

LOL, this is not usually one song that I'd get up and scream "that's a favourite!" but since I heard this song loud and clear in the background of my dream on television I thought it was worth documenting...and plus I kinda like MUSE...they're kinda Radiohead-esque.

In any case I like the tortured melodramatic vocals too...LOL and the creepy organ bits.

MADONNA/Like a Prayer

I can't believe I haven't posted this- this is one of my favourite of her songs...or even songs from the 80s-yay 80s I miss them!!!

Madonna songs are one of my favourite for sing-alongs :) and I love how she's always able to put a different spin on all her old songs with each different rendition.

Sunday, July 26, 2009

KEANE/Crystal Ball

LOL haven't pulled out this band in a looong time...just thought this song was pertinent cos it seems like so many twenty something year old women are rather compelled to go visit psychics to "know" their futures in advance! What the hell is the fun in that??

Having been dragged to one at a very tender and naive age...let me tell you I'm not joining the exodus any time soon!

BJORK/Innocence

okay sorry, I get into these BJORK moods- and plus I picked up Volta for a cool $13 today :D!great album...

I think this song resonates with my inherent complexity and contradiction very nicely. and it's a pretty cool clip.

when i was once fearless
innocence roared, still amazes
untouchable innocence
it's still here but in different places

BJORK/Dull Flame of Desire

This is my fav song off VOLTA

i love your eyes my dear...their splendid, sparkling fire...

BJORK/Wanderlust

Wanderlust! relentlessly craving
Wanderlust! peel off the layers
Until we get to the core

Relentless restlessness
Liberates me (sets me free)

I just want to be many many miles from here...I think I am just sick of the scenery for now...I definitely have WAN-DER-LUST! Need some fresh air. New inspiration.

This is a pretty cool clip-reminds me of Japanese anime...

GARBAGE/it's all over but the crying

very surprised i haven't posted this one...this, i think has to be my FAVOURITE garbage song...

I LOVE TCHEKA! (Nu Monda)

My precious Tcheka CD arrived recently and I've been listening to it almost exclusively for the past 2 weeks! The album I got was Nu Monda...I so love his voice and music I'll probably get more...he reminds me alot of my other African music hero Youssou N'Dour...such a shame there are only three Tcheka songs on Youtube...

For more awesome Tcheka - visit his streaming previews at Myspace. Or his website.

Bye Bye, Michael...

You know someone is truly great when they're just known the world over solely by their first name...and by so many generations!

In all honesty post "Diana", I have witnessed no other major world figure suddenly pass away - prematurely- in my lifetime and it's pretty sad. The truly great affect everyone no matter how big or small a fan of his music you are...a huge number of people in the world have grown up "knowing" Michael Jackson.

For me my first conscious memory of hearing Michael Jackson (and loving it) singing it dancing around as a kid was his hit "BEAT IT"...Man that Thriller album was awesome- probably the height of his super stardom for me. And I have to say when many started boycotting his music during and post the child molestation accusations I honestly didn't buy into it...hence I still have his music sitting on my CD shelf not sitting in a dark corner gathering dust!

Anyway here's 2 clips I've chosen to commemorate his life as one of music's GREATS...MJ doing "Beat it" and as a cutie back in 1970 as part of the Jackson 5....R.I.P Matey!

THE CURE/Inbetween Days

These lyrics very much resonate with me today...in a good kind of way :) Such an 80s Dag! *lol

Yesterday I got so old
I felt like I could die
Yesterday I got so old
It made me want to cry
Go on go on
Just walk away
Your choice is made
Go on go on
And disappear
Go on go on
Away from here
And I know I was wrong
When I said it was true
That it couldn't be me and be her
Inbetween without you
Without you
Yesterday I got so scared
I shivered like a child
Yesterday away from you
It froze me deep inside
Come back come back
Don't walk away
Come back come back
Come back today
Come back come back
Why can't you see
Come back come back
Come back to me
And I know I was wrong
When I said it was true
That it couldn't be me and be her
Inbetween without you
Without you

BEN GIBBARD/I will follow you into the dark

:-D! I am so loving my extra bandwidth...means lots more sound and picture for me!!!

I think this song is very pretty...especially at this time of night...and also cos it's so...Grey's Anatomy...a show I've followed through all the seasons...cos it's relevant to love for my learning ;) and also cos I can totally relate to the protagonist, Meredith...even the actress who plays her...Ellen Pompeo- we're practically birthday twins lol.

CROWDED HOUSE/In My Command

Yay Finn Brothers!!! Is the band Australian or New Zealander...we all like to claim them hehe...

In any case I'm grappling back those reigns cos my horses were getting outta control! Cracking the whip- no more time to be stuffing around like I have been! :p

NEW ORDER/Subculture

Was chatting with some mates and the notion of "normalcy", social norms and conventions was a feature...which caused me to reflect...of course I am that novelty alternate..."The anti-norm" ;)

!!!Love this song, PLAYED LOUD!!! Cheers to all fellow "unique creatures" LOL

THE KILLERS/Smile like you mean it

Woohoo! I am finally seeing the glimmer of light, smelling the fresh air that wafts in from the end of the tunnel! Shortly I will be able to "Smile Like I mean it!" :-D

GARBAGE/Not My Idea

When I get into an acute state of study induced stress I usually bring out the big guns which tonight comprised:

half a bottle of red wine
hoola hoop
anarchic music played LOUD...this song "THIS IS NOT MY IDEA OF A GOOD TIME" is a special favourite in the line up ;)

Saturday, June 6, 2009

BJORK/Who is it

LOL it's obviously a Bjork day today. This is my fav track off Medulla...This clip...lol can't help but make me grin...we Scorpio chicks sure aren't...boring! ;)

BJORK/Unison

At this time where I'm in deep contemplation over Yin and Yang(as a matter of necessity :p), I appreciate the irony of being particularly drawn to this beautiful song by Bjork, "Unison".

Bjork is definitely one of my all-time favourite musicians, public figures and performers, with an amazing voice and distinctly unique character ;) Sadly, still never seen her live yet...we Southern Hemisphere people are totally neglected...p.s The creative arrangement and instrumentalisation is a real pleasure in this clip...plus, I am very partial to harps and this one very impressively features one - yay!

THE VERVE/Space and Time

Isn't it funny how you can have one favourite song on an album so you don't notice any other songs on the album but then one day WOW suddenly you discover a new favourite! Cool.

RIDE/Vapour Trail

This is my current Favourite, Favourite song right now...on repeat!

Funny thing is I just like the tune I never actually knew what the lyrics were before I looked them up just now....turns out it's a very romantic song LOL ;)

First you look so strong,
Then you fade away.
The sun will blind my eyes,
I love you anyway.
First you form a smile,
I watch you for a while.
You are a vapour trail,
In a deep blue sky.

Tremble with a sigh,
Glitter in your eye.
You seem to come and go,
I never seem to know.
And all my time,
is yours as much as mine.
We never have enough,
Time to show our love.

Exotic Sounds of the East-Orient

Lately I find myself drawn to exotic sounds...in particular traditional oriental music utilising traditional instruments...such as that of The Guo Brothers- off their awesome 1990 album YUAN. I think it makes for more "awake" study music compared to the usual European classical baroque...a nice refreshing change anyway...

I also like Nigel Kennedy & The Kroke Band - their East Meets West album with excerpts in clip below:

Monday, May 18, 2009

KATIE MELUA/Mary Pickford

Embodying the *whimsy* which we so love...Enjoy :)

Friday, May 15, 2009

Angelique Kidjo/Loloye

How gorgeous is this song! I find it particularly pretty in these wee hours of the night - a bit like an exotic African lullaby :)

The clip is a tribute to women...March 8 is International Women's Day :)...sorry my timing is a bit off...LOL

Anyhow I digress, please enjoy...one of my favourite world musicians...who is an absolute delight to catch performing live...unfortunately we aren't that lucky this side of the hemisphere to get to see her very often!

MORRISSEY/Hold on to your friends

I don't know why suddenly I am in love with this song...the combination of notes particularly at the beginning just hit all the right buttons...

You also can't get past these lyrics LOL... typical Morrissey honesty and realistic cynicism ;)

But now you only call me when you're feeling depressed
When you feel happy I'm so far from your mind
My patience is stretched, my loyalty vexed
You're losing all of your friends...

the shitty friend experience...a universal affliction especially when you're a giver, which is probably why I am now so selective about mine since in older age the less I can be bothered investing...

GREEN DAY/She

Wow, finally I post something so mainstream that it's had almost 3 million views! "Good" does not always = obscure ;)

He, this song totally encapsulates my teenage years (the lyrics say it all) :p

Monday, April 13, 2009

Nitin Sawhney/River Pulse

This is what I'm really listening to right now though...I love his style of music- exotic rhythms, bohemian, world fusion, instrumental...I wonder how you can classify the genius of Nitin Sawhney exactly in words...

COCTEAU TWINS/Carolyn's Fingers

Okay, so I have posted this one before but this is a different version...I just wanted to celebrate a "breakthrough" of sorts for me...and this song kind of sums the feeling up in one package nicely :)

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

MASSIVE ATTACK/Better Things

Massive Attack Fans, one of my favourite songs off the album Protection.

" Don't drag me down just because you're down, just cos you're blue don't make me too. Though you've found, beauty more than me, don't talk to me about being free. That's Freedom without Love and Magic without Love...Hear me Sing, Better Things will surely come My Way...

Haha these lyrics pretty well sum it up...the burden of being an Empath! I just hope Karma is Real...if so, Life should be Sweet!

Saturday, March 28, 2009

Andrew Bird/Heretics

"Thank God it's Fatal..."

Remember seeing something in the news lately regarding medical intervention (withdrawal of food and water being fed trough tubes being illegal?) with those in a persistent vegetative state...

My thoughts go out to all those and their loved ones that have to live in this state of protracted limbo...I hope there is quick resolve to your suffering!

Friday, March 27, 2009

Bob Dylan/Don't Think Twice, It's Alright

This has definitely got to be one of my favourite old fogie songs. Maybe a bit world weary for young'uns!

In any case it fits nicely with the MLC(Mid Life Crisis) I thought I was about to spiral into...

basically, if you can be patient, turn off your hyperactive stressy tendancies and wait it out for tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow, the storm shall soon enough pass and the sun will shine again no matter how doom and gloom things seemed just the other day...

Cheers to this great song :)

GARBAGE/When I Grow Up

"When I grow up I'll be stable, when I grow up I'll turn the tables..."

Hmmm I can feel the latter part happening already, but I'm still waiting for the former part...the funny thing is though, I feel at least 60 inside...which by most people's accounts would make for being "grown up"!! I guess until I get the health liability under control it is hard to achieve the kind of "stable" I want in life.

In any case, I think this is a great clip...if I was a talented extrovert, this is probably the kind of gig you might find me doing ;)

Friday, February 27, 2009

Portishead/It's a Fire

I was feeling incredibly daunted at the huge task ahead of me and feeling kind of anxiety-ridden...this song immediately came to mind...

Monday, February 16, 2009

Tears for Fears/Mad World

Was spoilt with lots of cool music videos from Ps collection...had totally forgotten about this great song...he thinks the original version is so daggy but I have to say I love it- so 80s!!! I have also included the "cooler" more contemporary but also awesome Donnie Darko version as well to cover all bases...

Sarah Blasko/ Perfect Now

In an ideal world, everything is

Perfect Now

Unfortunately, Timing is everything...
